Top Management Control System |
An old management adage says, "You can't manage what you don't
measure." When variables we want to control are not measurable, when they are
not black and white, we hesitate to take quick and forceful action.
We relax when the picture is cloudy. It is only natural.
Problems are hidden. There is always doubt as to when to act and what that action
should be.
What is required is that every organization have a system
through which the managers manage. This system provides the necessary
information for effective decision making to keep the organization on the
greatest payoff course.
Instrument Panels
Today's modern airplanes have sophisticated instrument panels.
They tell if
the
systems are working, provide navigational guidance and indicate the positions
of controls. The instrument panel is there to help the pilot accomplish the
mission and to protect the aircraft and its passengers.
Similarly, the Weekly Management Report is the corporate
instrument panel. It helps assure that the company gets a fair return on
investment. It also protects the invested capital and the jobs of its employees.
